Bitcamp Prize Guitar

Every year the University of Maryland holds a hackathon called Bitcamp. One of the sponsors approached us about crafting an instrument to use as a prize for the 2016 competition.

Pink Ivory King

Laugh all you want, but Pink Ivory is our favorite wood; no question, hands down. The fact that wood like this even exists baffles the mind. We wanted to make a guitar that showcased all the beautiful color and figure ranges on this wood to the fullest. Across this showcase you'll see plain, fiddleback, mottled, light pink, dark pink, and everything in between. To make sure that the pink ivory had a canvas to stand out on we used subtly beautiful walnut as the backdrop.

Spalted Quilt Maple Model 1

Sometimes you just want to go over the top. This guitar was our way of scratching that itch. Between the 5A spalted quilt maple top, the ridiculous radial purfling, the rich dark east Indian rosewood neck, and the just crazy electronics this guitar screams 'over the top' from the rooftops. A special shoutout to Scott Walker guitars for the fantastic boost/buffer circuit as well as his online schematic creation software that was invaluable in figuring out how to make this complex wiring a reality.

Michael's Model2J

The Raygun Experimental Labs doesn't often take custom orders... we're too busy playing with exciting new ideas in our heads! However, when a friend of the company approaches, asking you to simply build something cool that has a sun theme, it's hard to say no. Customers that give you all the freedom in the world to build the coolest guitars possible are the best!

Variax Equipped Model 1

The Variax circuitry has always intrigued us and we finally got around to building a guitar with it. This instrument is the ultimate studio beast! The classical T-style woods and electronics give the player access to one of the most recorded guitar sounds of all time. Throw that together with the ability to dial in, on an independent circuit and output, anything from a Les Paul to a Dobro or SItar and the possibilities are endless. Last but not least the comfort of the neck can't be beat.

Blue Paisley Short-Scale Model 2

Despite being a short-scale Model 2, this guitar was actually the first Model 2 ever built. It was the prototype guitar for what would become Raygun Engineering's Model 2 import line. Some of the cooler features are the blue paisley fabric finish (yes, that's actual fabric under there), custom chromed-steel control covers, and this ridiculously figured quilted birdseye maple fretboard.

BSB Shred Tribute

One of the coolest finishes of all time has got to be the BSB (burnt stained blue) from a limited run of guitars for Steve Vai. The burning aspect was always a huge fascination to me. However, over time some of the flaws of this finish came to light; the oil coating made the greenish tinge lessen over time (especially on necks) and the oil finish provided only minimal protection to the soft poplar body it covered. This made it so that people frequently kept their guitars guarded instead of played.

Model 1 Acoustic

I've never been one for building to the designs of others. Therefore, after a few acoustics of a more traditional form I was drawn to create something more "me." I was looking for the sweet sound of an OM-style instrument as over the years I've found that they best complement the timbre as well as volume of my voice. However, I was determined to have my acoustics play as fantastically as my electrics; including the upper-fret-access that I achieve through a heavily sculpted heel.

Anasazi-7

I had wanted to build a 7-string guitar for a long while and was finally inspired to by this fantastic Anasazi cave painting work I saw. To go with this theme I chose an array of woods with vibrant desert colors and finished them in a satin finish to give them that alive, yet muted, feel the desert can have.

Model 1 Prototype in Caribbean Burst

This guitar is the first "Model 1" ever built. I place the "Model 1" in quotes like that because at the time it wasn't even called that yet! This guitar will always hold a special place for me as it single-handedly created the design aesthetic that drives the Raygun Guitar models to this day.
